Why Mantrailing Might Be the Most Inclusive Dog Sport Around

There is a vast array of dog sports available to us. However, few that I have come across are as inclusive as mantrailing.

Every dog loves to use their nose, and mantrailing allows them to do just that in a constructive way that satisfies that biological itch.

Mantrailing is a sport open to every dog, regardless of breed, age, or training level. It's suitable for handlers of all ages, low-impact, and even ideal for reactive dogs. In fact, it's fantastic for building confidence in dogs nervous of people, and helping dogs learn to focus on a job around their triggers.

Unlike many sports, it does not require your dog to have a certain level of obedience. We use a harness and long line, meaning there is no requirement for a good recall or even a dog that listens! Very often, the more independent dogs actually find it easier.

How It Works

The idea behind the sport is that we set up scenarios for the dogs to find a missing person. The ‘misper’ hides in a designated spot, and the dog sniffs a scent article from that person. From there, the dog follows the trail and finds the person in exchange for a tasty food reward or a game with their favourite toy.

The dogs learn to trail in a range of environments, from fields, to forests, and even in town centres and urban environments.

Confidence-Building for Nervous Dogs

For those who are afraid of people, we typically start with someone they know well to build confidence. However, every dog I have ever worked with who struggles around people has quickly built enough confidence to find someone who is a total stranger to them.

The sport is set up so that it's easy to cater to the individual dogs and any quirks they may have. The dogs always pick up the concept of the game incredibly quickly. After all, we're simply harnessing something that all dogs do naturally and channelling it into something constructive.

Endless Progression, Every Time

The progression opportunities with this sport are endless. We can add complexity to trails, offer aged trails, and get creative with scent articles. Different venues and environments add new challenges.

Best of all, every dog will go home exhausted. It may be a relatively low-impact sport, however, it provides a lot of mental stimulation, and a post-mantrailing dog is tired and very satisfied.
